On Being Terrified

Pregnancy 101.

The only solace I've found related to being pregnant (and eventual labor) is that so many people (on facebook) are doing it.  And so the logic goes: if all of them can do it, so can I. (Right?) With potentially multiple years between now and when that actually happens, the anxiety has already begun to stir, and eventual plans to bum(p)-rush [insert smiley face] the myriad of options to breath (yoga), stay calm (therapy), and get through it (TBD) have initiated.  Enjoy!

On Maple Syrup

(with Milk.)

Never a committed fan of the overly-doughy, maple syrup-soaked pancake, I’ve convinced myself (since childhood) that waffles are, indeed, a different breed.  Aside from the potentially identical batter ingredients, the crevices of a well-cooked waffle give the façade of a much more appeasing texture combined with the perfect balance of sweet and savory. While my own pancake standards are nearly non-existent (I’ll only dabble on camping trips when just about anything tastes good), my waffle standards are all encompassing, and almost always require a tall glass of any-percent (preferably whole) milk.  Enjoy!

On Brooklyn, New York

Easy Nostalgia.

My 48-hour trips to Brooklyn are never long enough and require constant strategic prioritization of quality time with the family (and new-ish nephew), catch-up time with close friends, shopping at familiar boutiques, and inhaling a combination of restaurant treats and home-cooked meals.  While some priorities inevitably get redistributed to the next East Coast Marathon, emails, texts, g-chats and occasional virtual happy hours fill the time in between.  Enjoy!

On Young Love

Riding the bus (to work) with high school freshman - carrying fresh-baked brownies with braids trailing off their left shoulders and skinny jeans awkwardly hugging their bony ankles - I’m reminded of my own youthful angst filled with young love and unflattering photos.  Driver’s Education classes with unpracticed parallel parks prefaced hours of gossipy phone conversations over this boy and that, as friendships were forged and fractured at the drop of a hat.  Enjoy!

On Breakup Parties

Cele-break-ion

While breakin’ up is almost always hard to do, it’s also a welcomed opportunity to bring together friends and family to lament the loss of the relationship while celebrating what(ever)’s next.  Through a combination of tears and laughter, participants recount details of both the significant and less endearing moments of the couple that once was, as glimpses of the unknown are fantasized in conjunction with red wine and wing men.  Enjoy!

On Almosts

"I am an “almost” writer." -Article's Author

...almost never, almost always, almost certainly, almost ready, almost willing, almost impulsively, almost as though, almost immediately, almost everywhere, almost kind, almost cruel, almost exciting, almost home, almost asleep, almost dead. She said “Don’t” almost before his lips had touched hers.

On Comfort Levels

M or F?

To those who know me well, it's not surprising I prefer a foot rub - if that - to almost any other option on the spa/massage menu.  Foot fetishes aside, I tend to distance myself from general physical affection with non-family companions, and find my heart rate increase upon salutation-time with friends.  That said, living too far from those amiable folks on the east coast, I’ve begun to make exceptions during weddings and occasional reunions, as an absence of connection would likely offend.  Enjoy!

On Monogamous Commitment

Un-blurred Lines.

With a lifetime of unknowns, a monogamous relationship might feel – at times – like a daunting task.  Unexpected strangers, co-workers, and friends-of-friends pose fantasies of what might have been, as we force ourselves to choose between right and wrong, the past and the future, enticement and eternity.  Enjoy!

On the Other Half

Upper, Middle, Lower.

Born, raised, and proud of my middle-class status, I am comfortable and committed to my life as a public servant, except for one thing: my addiction to pinterest.  Ever since friends and acquaintances started collecting images, blogs, and links to overpriced lacey, satin, leather purses/gowns/rusticbarnwoodbedroomsets, my comfortably minimal lifestyle feels leagues below stardom.  Re-pinned couture wedding dresses combined with vacations I’ll likely only visit through my virtual screen lead me to question my acceptance of servant over service.  Enjoy but don’t judge!
