Internal Motivations.
At the turn of the new year, most of us vow to take better
care of our health – to exercise more, floss, lose weight, eat more fruits and
vegetables – and spend the next few weeks exceeding our goals, high on the
momentum of starting anew. But then
Gossip Girl and Mad Men resume, and friends have social viewings filled
with pizza and fried appetizers, and
before we know it, four hours of couch-filled inactivity ensues. And then Valentine’s Day rolls around (my annually-designated
steak dinner), and birthdays with cupcakes, and Easter candy, mother’s day brunches, and all of a sudden new year’s eve
resolutions feel like distant memories, and the internal debate ensues about
how to get on track and find motivation that truly sticks. A few days ago, a (good) friend said (matter-of-factly)
that she flosses every day, as if this feat were actually part of her daily
routine (is that even possible?). Ninety-six hours later, I’m going 4 out of 5 days strong, an accomplishment I’ve failed at for at
least a decade of January promises. (Plus,
I have a dental exam on June 6th.)
Enjoy!
